What could be causing chronic back pain?

I have had chronic back pain for four years and nothing i do seems to aleviate it. I am taking codrydamol and codeine every day and they are not taking the pain away fully either. I have had an mri which showed no abnormalities. does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? any ideas would be grateful as i am the end of my tether now. thanks
