Should I send asking how is he doing ?

After my university exams there was a revolution in the country I was studying at so I left to see my family and escape the violence. There was this guy in my class who I had some feelings for. I still have to go back for 1 more year but I was just wondering do you think I should send him asking how's he doing? I sent him once at the beginning of the situation and he replied but I'm thinking I do not want to send again because I do not want to seem like I care too much....that seems to be my problem with guys; I show them I care too much.
